A New Chapter for Kate Garraway
Kate Garraway has shared how the reality show Celebrity Traitors has helped her navigate a difficult period in her life. The broadcaster, who lost her husband Derek Draper to a four-year battle with Covid in January 2022, has been open about the emotional and financial challenges she's faced since his passing.
Derek, who was 56 when he passed away, left behind a legacy that continues to impact Kate and their two children, Darcey, 19, and Billy, 16. One of the most significant hurdles Kate has had to deal with is the debt incurred from caring for Derek during his illness. She revealed that the costs ranged between £500,000 and £800,000.
Focusing on her personal journey, Kate mentioned that being part of Celebrity Traitors provided a much-needed distraction. She described the experience as "fun, intense, and eye-opening," adding that it felt like a rollercoaster. The show offered her a chance to step away from the pressures of daily life and focus on herself.

During the filming, there were strict rules in place—no phones, no internet, and no access to live TV. This allowed Kate to immerse herself in the game while also reflecting on her future. Her sister-in-law was there to look after the kids, giving her the space to process everything.
Keeping Derek Close
Despite the loss, Kate has found ways to keep Derek's memory alive within the family. She shared how conversations often revolve around him, even in everyday decisions. For instance, when Darcey suggests something, Kate might ask, “What do you think Dad would think about that?” Darcey then responds, offering her own perspective. This dynamic allows Derek to remain a part of their lives while helping Darcey develop her own voice.
Kate also spoke about how she still feels Derek’s presence in her mind. As a wife, she carries his voice with her, striving not to let him down. She believes he would be proud of her and their family.

In a recent interview, Kate appeared on the cover of Prima, where she showcased a series of glamorous red outfits. One look featured a bejewelled chiffon gown with a plunging neckline and a tulle skirt, while another included a balloon satin midi skirt paired with a sheer metallic blouse and a large bow. In her final outfit, she opted for a silver and gold sequin gown, complemented by a sheer cream shawl with sequins and a feather lining.
The Emotional and Financial Struggles
Kate admitted that the past few years have been emotionally taxing. She has done “a lot of crying” over the challenges her family has faced. However, she saw Celebrity Traitors as an opportunity to have fun and engage in some playful mischief. She described the show as the best on TV and felt it was a perfect way to shift her focus from the serious aspects of life.
Beyond the emotional struggles, Kate has also dealt with significant financial burdens. In addition to the care costs for Derek, there were other debts related to their previous business ventures. A liquidator's report highlighted that Derek’s psychotherapeutic company, Astra Aspera, went bankrupt, leaving hundreds of thousands of pounds in outstanding debts, including a large bill to HMRC.
This isn’t the first time Kate has faced financial difficulties. In 2012, two of the businesses she and Derek controlled went under. Fulfill Media Ltd had debts totaling £922,807, and Countrymouse Media Ltd owed £189,121. Both companies left significant liabilities, including amounts owed to HMRC and other creditors.
Despite these challenges, Kate continues to promote her various work projects while managing the ongoing financial responsibilities. Her resilience and determination shine through as she navigates this new chapter of her life.
