Denver Broncos' Defensive Adjustments Ahead of Key Matchup
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos are making some strategic changes to their defense as they prepare for a crucial game against the Houston Texans. With a five-game winning streak on the line, the team is navigating the absence of one of its key players, Pat Surtain II, while also welcoming back Dre Greenlaw from a suspension.

Surtain, who was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in the previous season, is expected to miss multiple games due to a strained left pectoral muscle sustained during a tackle in the Broncos' 44-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. His absence is a significant blow to the team's defensive strategy, but the coaching staff remains confident in their depth and ability to adapt.
New Faces in the Lineup
To fill the void left by Surtain, second-year player Kris Abrams-Draine will step into the starting lineup. Coach Sean Payton praised Abrams-Draine, noting that he has the best hands on the team. "Not having Pat's going to be huge for us," said defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. "But I expect no drop-off. The standard doesn't change."
The return of Greenlaw from his one-game suspension adds another layer of strength to the defense. Greenlaw had been suspended after a heated exchange with referee Brad Allen following the Broncos' dramatic 33-32 win over the New York Giants. In his first public comments since the suspension, Greenlaw expressed regret over putting his teammates in a difficult position. "That was just an emotional game, first game back," he said.
Greenlaw's Journey Back
Greenlaw's return to the field came after missing the first seven weeks of the season due to a quadriceps injury that lasted six months. He made his debut in the game against the Giants, where he recorded six tackles in just 21 snaps. "I thought it went well. We won the game. It felt good for me to go out there after a year and a half just to play football," Greenlaw remarked.
Despite the positive start, Greenlaw faced another setback when he had to sit out another game, which he described as "very difficult." "Of course you want to be out there anytime you've got a game, but I mean just whoop the Texans, that's all I can think of," he said.
Confidence in the Team
Greenlaw is optimistic about his role on the team despite limited practice time since his injury. "We've got a great defense already. Guys are flying around making plays. And for me, I just want to be a part of that, just want to have fun out there with them and show them what I can do," he said.
Joseph emphasized that the defense will not rely solely on one player to fill Surtain's shoes. Instead, the responsibility will be shared among the secondary, including starting cornerback Riley Moss, rookie Jahdae Barron, and the front-seven, including Greenlaw.
"We have a good plan to kind of pull Pat's weight with multiple guys. It won't just be one guy. It will be all of us, our D-line providing pass rush and our young DBs just playing it right and playing to the system," Joseph said.
Mentally and Physically Ready
Joseph expressed excitement about Greenlaw's return, highlighting his mental preparation. "Mentally, he's been awesome. He's been locked in. He's been studying. Even when he wasn't practicing, he was taking every walk-through rep. So, mentally he's fine," Joseph said. However, he noted that Greenlaw needs more physical reps to regain his rhythm.
For Greenlaw, the focus is on contributing to an elite defense that leads the league in sacks, third-down percentage, and red-zone percentage. "For me it’s not about me coming in and trying to be more or do more," he said. "It’s just about me going out there, being myself, because that’s why they brought me here."
