Flavor Flav Joins U.S. Olympic Bobsleigh as Hype-Defying Fan

Flavor Flav Joins the 2026 Winter Olympics as Hype Man

US rapper Flavor Flav is making a splash in the world of sports once again, this time by supporting the American bobsleigh and skeleton teams for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Known for his iconic role as a founding member of the Grammy-winning group Public Enemy, Flav has taken on a new title: "official hype man" for the teams. This role, which he has mastered in the past, involves energizing and supporting athletes with his unique energy and charisma.

A hype man, in hip-hop culture, is typically a backing vocalist or someone who provides encouragement and support. In sports, it refers to a key figure who brings enthusiasm and motivation to a team. Flav's involvement in this capacity highlights his deep connection to both music and athletics.

Flav, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr., became fascinated with the sport during a recent visit to the bobsleigh and skeleton training facility at the 2002 Olympic Track in Utah. He described the partnership as a blessing, comparing it to the movie Cool Runnings, which tells the story of Jamaican athletes competing in bobsleigh at the Winter Olympics.

Despite his initial unfamiliarity with the sport, Flav quickly adapted. At the track, he insisted on trying out the skeleton, a high-speed sliding sport. When officials suggested he start lower down the track for safety, he opted for a higher position. On his second run, he reached a speed of 107 km/h, just 20 km/h slower than elite athletes.

Dan Barefoot, a U.S. skeleton athlete, was impressed by Flav’s performance. “I was kind of upset at how good he was. It’s a sport that takes a lot of skill, but he made it look straightforward,” he said.

This isn’t Flav’s first foray into sports. At the Paris Olympics, he served as the personal hype man for the U.S. women’s water polo team. He also attended the event when tennis legend Billie Jean King received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Additionally, Flav supported discus thrower Veronica Fraley after she faced financial difficulties, offering his support through social media.

His presence has been a positive influence on the team. Athletes and staff have praised the energy and confidence he brings. Dan Barefoot described Flav as one of the coolest and most adventurous men he has met. “We have all been so hyped to have him with us. Put aside the fact that Flav is one of the greatest hype men of all time, the energy in the room ... you had people who often aren’t talking to each other high-fiving and hugging because of the experience of being around him. There’s a lot of energy and a lot of confidence around us right now.”

Fans of Flavor Flav, the U.S. bobsleigh and skeleton teams, or both, can look forward to seeing their efforts when the Milano–Cortina Winter Olympics officially begin on February 6 next year. The event promises to be an exciting blend of athleticism, music, and hype, led by one of the most recognizable figures in hip-hop.
