Denver's Defense Adjusts as Key Players Return
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos' defense is undergoing some changes as they prepare for a crucial matchup against the Houston Texans. With a five-game winning streak on the line, the team is looking to maintain their momentum despite some key absences.
Pat Surtain II, the NFL's reigning Defensive Player of the Year, is out with a strained left pectoral muscle. He sustained the injury while making a tackle during Denver's 44-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Surtain is expected to miss multiple games, creating an opportunity for another player to step up.

A New Face in the Starting Lineup
Surtain's absence will be filled by second-year player Kris Abrams-Draine, who has been praised by coach Sean Payton for his exceptional hands. Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph emphasized that the team will not experience a drop-off in performance.
"Having Pat is going to be huge for us," Joseph said. "But I expect no drop-off. The standard doesn't change."
The Broncos are also welcoming back Dre Greenlaw, who was suspended for one game after a heated exchange with referee Brad Allen following a win over the New York Giants. Greenlaw made his return in that game and is now eager to contribute more in the upcoming match against the Texans.
Greenlaw's Journey Back to the Field
Greenlaw's return to the field was a significant moment, especially after missing most of the season due to a quadriceps injury. His debut came just two weeks ago, where he recorded six tackles in 21 snaps. Despite the limited time on the field, he felt it was a positive step forward.
"I thought it went well. We won the game. It felt good for me to go out there after a year and a half just to play football," Greenlaw said.
However, Greenlaw had to sit out another game, which he described as "very difficult." He expressed his desire to be on the field for every game but is focused on helping the team defeat the Texans.
Confidence in the Team's Depth
Despite the challenges, Greenlaw remains confident in his ability to contribute to the defense. He signed a three-year, $31.5 million free agent contract and is eager to prove himself on the field.
"We've got a great defense already. Guys are flying around making plays. And for me, I just want to be a part of that, just want to have fun out there with them and show them what I can do," Greenlaw said.
Joseph is pleased to have Greenlaw back on the field, as he believes the team has a solid plan to compensate for Surtain's absence. The defensive coordinator highlighted the importance of teamwork and the contributions of other players, including starting cornerback Riley Moss, rookie Jahdae Barron, and the front-seven, including Greenlaw.
A Strong Defense Ready for the Challenge
The Broncos' defense is currently leading the league in sacks, third-down percentage, and red-zone percentage. They are also among the top five in net yards and points allowed per game. Greenlaw is excited to add to this elite defense and emphasizes that his focus is on being himself rather than trying to do more.
"For me it’s not about me coming in and trying to be more or do more," Greenlaw said. "It’s just about me going out there, being myself, because that’s why they brought me here."
With the team's depth and determination, the Broncos are ready to face the challenge ahead. The defense, despite the absence of key players, remains confident and prepared to deliver strong performances.
