Flavor Flav Joins U.S. Bobsleigh Team as Hype-Defying Fan

Flavor Flav’s New Role as Hype Man for U.S. Winter Olympic Teams

US rapper Flavor Flav is making a splash in the world of sports once again, this time by supporting the American bobsleigh and skeleton teams for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Known for his energetic presence and contributions to hip-hop culture, Flav has taken on the role of "official hype man" for the teams. This title is a nod to his past work with the Grammy-winning collective Public Enemy, where he played a key role as a backing vocalist and supporter.

A hype man, in the context of hip-hop, is someone who energizes and supports a performer or group. In sports, it often refers to an individual who brings energy and motivation to a team. Flav's new position aligns with his long-standing passion for both music and athletic competition.

Flav, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr., became fascinated with the sport during a recent visit to the bobsleigh and skeleton training facility at the 2002 Olympic Track in Utah. During his visit, he expressed his excitement about the partnership, calling it "a blessing." He also made a playful reference to the movie Cool Runnings, which tells the story of a Jamaican bobsleigh team. "It’s cooler than Cool Runnings. It’s Coolest Runnings," he said.

Despite being a newcomer to the sport, Flav didn’t hesitate to try his hand at skeleton. When officials suggested he start lower on the track due to safety concerns, he insisted on a higher starting point. On his second run, he reached speeds of 107 km/h—only 20 km/h slower than elite athletes during competitions.

U.S. skeleton athlete Dan Barefoot was impressed by Flav’s performance. "I was kind of upset at how good he was. It’s a sport that takes a lot of skill, but he made it look straightforward," Barefoot said.

This isn't Flav's first time supporting athletes. At the Paris Olympics, he served as the personal hype man for the U.S. women’s water polo team. He was also present when tennis legend Billie Jean King received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Additionally, he supported discus thrower Veronica Fraley after she shared her financial struggles on social media.

Flav’s presence has been a boost for the team, with athletes and staff appreciating the energy he brings. "Oh my gosh, he’s one of the coolest, most adventurous men that I’ve ever met," said Barefoot. He continued, "We have all been so hyped to have him with us. Put aside the fact that Flav is one of the greatest hype men of all time, the energy in the room ... you had people who often aren’t talking to each other high-fiving and hugging because of the experience of being around him. There’s a lot of energy and a lot of confidence around us right now."

Fans of Flavor Flav, the U.S. bobsleigh and skeleton teams, or both, can look forward to seeing their efforts in action when the Milano–Cortina Winter Olympics officially begin on February 6 next year.
