Cashius Howell Aims for Rare Aggies Legacy with 2025 Surge

Cashius Howell's Path to Legacy at Texas A&M

Texas A&M defensive end Cashius Howell is on the verge of etching his name into the Aggies' history books. In a 49-25 victory over LSU, Howell matched his career high with 9.5 sacks, and with four games remaining in the 2025 season, he has the chance to make a significant impact. Through eight games, Howell has averaged more than one sack and tackle for loss per game, setting the stage for a potential finish of 14-15 sacks and 15-16 tackles for loss if these averages hold.

A Rich History of Defensive Excellence

Texas A&M has a long tradition of producing standout defenders. The term "sack leader" might seem ambitious, especially during the regular season. However, there are notable precedents. In 1979, Jacob Green recorded an impressive 20.0 sacks, a record that still stands today. Other Aggie legends, like Myles Garrett, have also made their mark. Garrett achieved three games with 3.5 or more sacks, including a 3.5-sack performance against Nevada, another against Louisiana-Monroe, and a 4.5-sack game against UTSA. If Howell can replicate such performances, he could climb the rankings quickly.

Multiple Sack Days Are Within Reach

Howell has already shown the ability to deliver multiple sacks in a single game. He has recorded 2.0 sacks or more in three games this season: against Utah State, Mississippi State, and LSU. With four games left, even a modest performance of one sack per game would place him eighth all-time in single-season sacks for Texas A&M. If he can increase that to six sacks over the remaining games, he would rank third in program history, behind Jacob Green (20.0 in 1979) and Von Miller (17.0 in 2009).

A Challenging but Promising Schedule

Texas A&M is currently ranked third in the country, with only Missouri, South Carolina, Samford, and Texas left on the schedule. While not an easy path, the remaining games offer opportunities for Howell to reach the 14.5-15.5 sack range. This could be a crucial step toward making a playoff run, as the Aggies are expected to compete for a national title. If Howell can hit that target in the regular season, he may use the playoffs to challenge Von Miller’s single-season record of 17.0 sacks.

Upcoming Matchup Against Missouri

Howell and the Texas A&M Aggies will host No. 19 Missouri next Saturday at 3:30 pm eastern time, with the game broadcast on ABC. This matchup will be a key test for Howell and the defense as they look to continue their strong performance.
