Busted Cancels Radio 1 Gig Over James Bourne's Health

Busted Cancels Radio 1 Concert Due to James Bourne's Illness

Busted, the iconic British pop band, has had to cancel their scheduled appearance at a Radio 1 concert on November 15 due to ongoing health concerns involving lead singer James Bourne. The band, consisting of James, Matt Willis, and Charlie Simpson, has made it clear that James’ well-being is their top priority. Despite efforts to recover, it remains uncertain what exactly is affecting James, as he has been absent from several recent events.

This news comes just weeks after James unexpectedly left the Busted Vs McFly tour in the UK and Ireland, just over 24 hours before the first show was set to begin. His decision came after a period of prolonged absences, which raised concerns among fans and fellow band members alike.

In a heartfelt Instagram post shared with only 24 hours' notice, James expressed his disappointment and explained the situation. "The VS tour kicks off tomorrow night in Birmingham, and as excited as I’ve been all year for this tour to begin," he wrote. "I’m really sorry to say that over the last 8 days it has become clear that I am not in good enough health to play these shows."

Now, it appears that James’ condition has not improved significantly, leading to the cancellation of the band’s one-off performance at Radio 1’s Anthems Live in Bradford. The band took to their official Instagram page to announce the change, stating: “We are sorry to say that we will no longer be performing at Radio 1’s Anthems Live in Bradford on November 15.” They emphasized that they would not perform without James, adding, “James’ health is our priority and having discussed as a band we agree it wouldn’t feel right to do this without him.”

The band also expressed their appreciation for Radio 1’s understanding and their hope to return to performing as a full group when the time is right.

Emotional Reactions from Band Members

During the first night of the tour, which Busted shares with McFly, Charlie Simpson addressed the audience in Birmingham, revealing that James was “really sick.” He added, “We love him so much and we miss him.”

Choking back tears, Matt Willis continued the emotional moment, saying, “We love him, we talked to him and we said, mate, do we pull out of this? What do we do? He said no – I want you to keep playing the shows.”

James had previously provided more details about his condition in his original announcement. He stated, “There’s a lot of information I still don’t have about my condition, but my bandmates, management, and I are unanimous in deciding that I should focus on the medical stuff for now.” He also expressed hope to return to the stage in the future, saying, “I really hope I can be in a position to come back further down the line. It’s still going to be an amazing show, and I will miss being there! See you all as soon as possible.”

A Deep Bond Between Band Members

Earlier this month, Matt Willis spoke about his close relationship with James during an episode of his On The Mend podcast. He reflected on the band’s formation in 2000, saying, “I’ve been in a long-term relationship, you know, I was 16 with these boys.” He described James as someone who had a significant impact on his life, even surpassing that of his own family.

“I’ve got quite a few things about James,” Matt said. “When I think about people in my life, apart from Emma [Willis], James Bourne has had more of an impact on me than anybody I’ve ever met. More than my family. I met that kid when we were 15 years old. I have been through everything with him, and I don’t think I’ve ever told him anything nice. We haven’t got that relationship.”

He went on to describe James as “the most individual person he’s ever met” and noted that he “will not change for anyone.”

Legacy of Busted

Formed in 2000, Busted achieved great success with four UK number one singles, two Brit Awards, and over 3 million records sold worldwide before disbanding in 2005. Their music continues to resonate with fans, and the band has recently reunited for various tours and performances.
