Prunella Scales' £3m London Home: A Life of 60 Years in the Spotlight

A Legacy of Love and Artistry

The home where national treasure Prunella Scales lived for nearly 60 years has become a symbol of her enduring legacy. This beloved £3 million family residence, located near Wandsworth Common in south London, was where she passed away at the age of 93. The house, which she purchased with her husband Timothy West in 1968, remains listed under both their names at the Land Registry, even though Mr. West died just a year prior, at the age of 90.

Despite discussions about selling the property six years ago, the couple chose to keep it, a testament to their deep connection to the place. Prunella’s sons, Samuel and Joseph, shared a heartfelt statement, revealing that she passed away "peacefully at home in London yesterday." They mentioned that she was watching Fawlty Towers the day before her death, a fitting tribute to her iconic role as Sybil, the wife of the notoriously rude hotel owner Basil Fawlty.

A Life in the Arts

Beyond her personal life, Prunella was also a successful businesswoman. She founded Snipe Productions in 1972, just two years before the first episode of Fawlty Towers. The company continues to operate, with her husband still listed as a director despite his passing. As of March 2024, the company had reserves of £293,800, and the accounts were signed off by her son Sam, who is also an actor known for his role in the Channel 5 series All Creatures Great and Small.

Timothy West, who passed away in November 2024, made a generous final gesture by leaving portions of his fortune to various charities close to his and Prunella's hearts. His will included donations such as £15,000 to The Combined Theatrical Charities Appeals Council, £10,000 each to the Bristol Old Vic and Theatre Royal Trust, Southwark Cathedral, arts charity Snipe Charitable Trust, and aid organization Medecins Sans Frontieres UK. Another £5,000 went to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

A Lasting Connection

West also left £20,000 to his sister Patricia Anne West in the will, initially drawn up in 2020 while he was living in Wandsworth Common, London. Scales received the remainder of the estate, a sum of £29,892. An amendment to the will in March 2024 stated: "I declare jointly with my wife Pru we are giving to our son Sam the sum of £300,000 to aid the renovation of his home."

Their story, marked by love, artistry, and generosity, continues to inspire. From their time on stage and screen to their final acts of kindness, Prunella and Timothy West left behind a legacy that resonates deeply with fans and loved ones alike. Their lives, intertwined through decades of partnership, remain a source of admiration and reflection.
